BiographyKathryn is a professional freelance musician based in Northern California. She is experienced in all aspects of flute repertoire from Baroque to the 21st century, including jazz. She also specializes in piccolo. For the past two seasons (2005–2006 and 2006–2007), she was principal flutist of La Jolla Symphony, and played flute, alto flute, and piccolo with the symphony for the past four concert seasons. Her most recent performance as principal flute with the La Jolla Symphony included the North American premiere of the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra by Philip Glass, performed at UCSD in November 2007. Recently, Kathryn was one of three flutists selected by Sir James Galway to perform in his masterclass held at Pepperdine University in December 2007. Kathryn has studied with Grammy-nominated jazz flutist Lori Bell. In the summer of 2004, Kathryn spent two weeks in Prague, Czech Republic, performing with the chamber music workshop Ameropa, and studied there with accomplished solo flutist, composer, and teacher Robert Stallman. Kathryn has performed with the Davis Chorale; UCSD's faculty new music ensemble, SONOR; the New England Philharmonic; Boston Civic Symphony; Boston University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras; the King's College Symphony Orchestra in London; the Young Musician's Foundation Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles; and the American Youth Symphony, also located in Los Angeles. She played for the soundtrack recording of the independent film, "The Item" (recorded in Los Angeles, music by Howard Drosser), which went to the Sundance Film Festival in 2000. She received her Master of Music degree in Flute Performance at Boston University, studying with Linda Toote (Boston Symphony Orchestra), and a B.A. in music performance from UCLA, where she studied with David Shostac (principal flute, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra) and Sheridon Stokes (first call studio artist). She spent a semester studying abroad at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she participated in masterclasses with William Bennett (London Symphony Orchestra and international soloist). She has also studied with notable San Diego flutists Winona Grant, Kerry Pound, and Damian Bursill-Hall. Kathryn has received a number of awards and scholarships; she was awarded first place in the Orchestral Excerpts Division of the San Diego Flute Guild Flute Festival 2004. She received a scholarship from the Leni FeBland foundation, and an award from the Women's Concert Association of Grossmont College in San Diego. She was invited to perform in a benefit concert at the Ray and Joan Kroc Performing Arts Center in San Diego as a previous winner of the Women's Concert Association scholarship. Other recognitions include first place in the Bellflower Symphony's Young Artist's Competition (Bellflower, CA), and second place in the winds division of the La Jolla Symphony Young Artist's Competition. Throughout her career, Kathryn has performed in various chamber music concerts and flute recitals. She teaches private flute and piano lessons.
